World Down Syndrome Day

Such an exciting week this week – World Down Syndrome Awareness Day is this Thursday on the 21st and we have been busy celebrating this month by our 21 Acts of Kindness campaign running up to the special day – you can follow more on our Facebook Page.

So you might ask “What is World Down Syndrome Day?

World Down Syndrome Day is on 21st March. This date – the 21st day of the 3rd month represents the 3 copies of chromosome 21, which is unique to people with Down syndrome.

This year marks the 12th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day, which is officially recognised by the United Nations.

Around one in 1,000 babies have Down’s Syndrome and it affects 750 babies in the UK every year. The aim of the awareness week is to increase understanding of the condition, and promote equal opportunities for people with Downs within their local communities.

We would love you to get involved in the campaign. Wearing odd socks is one way of showing support plus you can donate to our local group by text to 70070 – just text the amount you want to donate after CDSG21.

But why socks you may ask?

Well, because chromosomes look a little like socks, and people with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome!

You could also spread your support on social media upload a photo and tag:

#LotsOfSocks, #WorldDownSyndromeDay and #WDSD19

Have fun!
