Description

CDSSG are thrilled to announce the release of a 27 page Makaton pdf download to accompany the Going To School book. The idea behind the book is to offer a useful resource for parents, carers and professionals. The book offers a very useful guide and tips of how the Symbols can be printed, cut up and laminated to aid communication between you and your child.

Sections:

  • Going to School – Book Symbols
We have selected one Makaton Symbol per page that can be used when reading the book to support comprehension of the key theme within that page. This also supports pre-learning of the symbols that School may use on their visual timetable.
  • Going to School – Read along Signs
Here we have included a sentence plus key work signs that sums up each page. We have also added a few more useful signs per page to add to the conversation.
  • Going to School – Visual Timetable
This section is to support the start of the child’s school life and is intended to be used by the teaching staff. The daily routine covered in the going to school book is broken down into activities, each having a Symbol – for visual use in the classroom, and a sign to prompt/remind the teacher of the sign. There is a blank visual timetable strip as well as a blank now/next or first/then template. The symbols may be used in any way, e.g. simply attached to a Velcro strip on the wall, or a box/board on the pupil’s desktop.
  • Going to School – Bringing it all together
Use these pages as an alternative version of the book where you have the key symbols & signs included in an easy to read format with prompted discussion.

This pdf will be a great accompaniment to the Going to School book and can be used as a talking tool for any child starting school or to use with those already in a setting to promote conversation about what happened during their day. The booklet also includes a link to the on-line narration of the book.

The CDSSG are very excited with this project that has been lovingly put together by Amanda Glennon from Inclusive Teaching (IT) Matters.
