For World Down’s Syndrome Day 2019, UK charity Down Syndrome International supported people with Down syndrome to speak up about employment at the United Nations in Geneva by organising a side event on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
We are so proud of 3 of our members who travelled to Geneva to speak at this event about their thoughts & aspirations.
Harley Jolley & Francesca Goff both Shiner Fellows representing Time2Shine of CAAP and Charlie Lyne was our representative for Cornwall Down’s Syndrome Support Group.
You can see a video of the complete event at this link here: https://www.worlddownsyndromeday2.org/event/wdsd-geneva-2019 – to hear what Harley, Francesca and Charlie had to say zoom along to approx 29minutes 40 seconds …

Harley Jolley
Here to tell you about Shiners:
I worked in a team.
I liked being given responsibilities.
I am good at helping and being safe at work.
I am good at doing paperwork.
Its important to have a fun.
This is me having fun with Hector – its takes money for Time2Shine – we are collecting money.
This is me with my portfolio
One day I want to work for the police.
Thank you.

Francesca Goff
Hello my name is Francesca
which is Bonjour je m’appelle Francesca
I am a shiner fellow and I would like to read this poem.
It is called “Just See” by Paul Francis Horan.
See my ability,
Not my intellectual disability,
See me for what and who I am,
Understand me,
I am an extraordinary human being just like you,
I can do many and sometimes more things than you can do,
Seek not to pity me,
And I will not pity you,
I seek understanding, caring and love,
I give my love unconditionally,
So Why can’t you,
Just accept me for all that I am,
Don’t feel sorry for me for what I cannot do,
See my courage,
And you too will have the courage,
To see my flame of hope,
And maybe you will see how I can teach you to care and cope,
When all else is done,
When my battles are won,
We can by working together give this world a special gift,
When we Share the Caring Feeling,
We can all get a much-needed lift.
Thank you very much.

Charlie Lyne
Hi guys
My name is Charlie I’d like to tell you about my work experience as a shop keeper.
I liked helping and chatting to customers. I loved putting food products on the shelves.
As a waiter my first job of the day was to clear away breakfast tables and lay them ready for lunch. I love using the coffee machine to make my dad a drink.
As a gardener I used lots of gardening equipment. I love the electric wheelbarrow. It was great having lunch with the other gardeners. We had a good laugh.
As a chef I would prep lots different foods. My favourite job was taking the customers order.
Possible for a super hero like me.
Thank you and good night
